Now we need to allow users to login to the Elastix web interface but only use it to send faxes. This guide will help with setup of groups and group permissions in Elastix:. While the guide gives a specific example of giving users access to call reports, the permissions needed for faxing will be different.
I have one asterisk server in Germany and one In America and I need to send calls from Germany to America. America doesn't need to able to call out thru Germany. I am looking for a very simple method. I have tried the fo.
To allow sending of faxes only through the Elastix web interface, the permissions needed will be Virtual Fax and Send Fax.If you wanted a user to maintain the fax extensions and make sure they were mapped to the proper user and e-mail address, you could grant access to the Virtual Fax List and New Virtual Fax as well (probably not needed - user would still not be able to edit the actual extension, just the virtual fax). Additionally, if you have an administrative user that needs access to any and every fax coming into your server, grant the Fax Viewer permission to allow the user to view a log of all faxes sent and received as well as allow viewing of the actual fax transmissions. Now that you have tested that the user will be able to login to the Elastix web interface successfully, it's time to train the user.
Here's a helpful list of steps.1. Have the user login to the Elastix web interface using the credentials you created in step 2. You know this part is working.2.
Select the fax device to use. A fax device is a virtual fax that was setup in step 1. Make sure the user knows that there may be multiple fax devices and to select the one that matches the fax number you want them to use.3. Enter the destination fax number you want to use. Though you may be able to fax to multiple numbers by comma separating a list, that is not something I tested. Remember to obey the dial plans setup within your outbound routes / trunk configuration. If the user needs to dial 9 to get an outside line from a desk phone, they need to put a 9 first here too (unless you modify dial plan rules for your fax extensions).
If they are faxing a number that is long distance, a 1 is needed to make a long distance fax (in addition to any prepended digits to get an outside line).4. The user can choose to send a text only message or send an attachment (clicking Browse opens a window for them to use to select the file they want to send). Only one document can be attached, and as you can see from the screenshot, this will work for PDF, TIFF, or TXT files.5. Click Send once ready to send the fax. After the user clicks send, they get some immediate feedback on the status of their fax in the form of a message that flashes across the Send Fax screen in red letters. They should see messages like Initializing Server, Sending Job X, and a message indicating success or failure.
A failure message will appear in red, while a success message will appear in blue. If the fax does fail, the user can try to resend the fax by making any changes they want (or not making changes) and clicking Send once again. If the virtual fax has been configured properly as described in step 1, the user should receive an e-mail from the Elastix server with the fax they sent attached upon successful transmission.
The user will not receive an e-mail notification if a fax fails. There is a Hylafax report generated at the and of the day that is email to you (your email you set up in elastix). This reports inbound and outbound activity.
Using Asterisk as a UAC (User agent client) Requirements. Broadband internet connection (at least 128k).
A pc with linux and asterisk installed on it. For asterisk installation read chapter 3 of the book Asterisk the future of Telephony.
